Gibbs Care Center and Gibbs Manor are under the direction of Steelville Community Services, Inc., a not for profit corporation. The development of this corporation is the direct result of the estate of Clarence and Geraldine Gibbs who left approximately $250,000 to the Presbyterian Church.
The Steelville Presbyterian Church wanted to use this money to benefit the entire community. Therefore, a governing body of the church voted to allocate 80% of the total inheritance to build a community nursing home. On November 29, 1970, an organizational meeting, open to the public, was held at the Presbyterian Church. At this meeting members for the first board of directors were designated and the name of the not for profit corporation established at that time would be Steelville Community Services, Inc.
As a direct result of the planning and stewardship brought about by the Gibbs family bequest to the Steelville Presbyterian Church oveer 40 years ago, the Steelville community now has a first-class skilled nursing home (Gibbs Care Center), an assisted living, residential care facility (Gibbs Manor) and therapy services. These show the accomplishments that can be achieved from volunteer efforts by a caring community.
